Good afternoon. First, a massive thanks to you for subscribing and supporting our journalism this year. Both the Afternoon Update and Morning Mail are signing off for 2023, returning on Monday 8 January.

And now to the news – it was also the final day of Bruce Lehrmann’s defamation trial. The federal court heard a final statement from Lehrmann’s barrister, Steve Whybrow SC, who asserts there was no way Brittany Higgins was “10-out-of-10 drunk” on the night of the alleged rape, claims Higgins “deliberately destroyed evidence” and had “no qualms” about “telling complete falsehoods”.

Justice Michael Lee described some of Whybrow’s suggestions about Higgins’ behaviour as “simplistic”, adding that it could be consistent with someone “coming to terms with something traumatic”.

The melting glaciers of Karakoram

On the steep slope of a glacier jutting through the Hunza valley in Pakistan’s mountainous far north, Tariq Jamil measures the ice’s movement and takes photos. His mission: to mobilise his community of 200 families in Hassanabad, in the Karakoram mountains, to fight for a future for their village and way of life, increasingly under threat from unstable lakes formed by melting glacier ice. “I think there’s been plenty of people who’ve not had permission to wear stuff in the past. I was very clear and open about the armband, so I’ll deal with that with the ICC and I’ll have those conversations with them.” – Usman Khawaja

Khawaja says he will not wear a black armband at the Boxing Day Test, but will work with Cricket Australia on a way to express his support for people in Gaza.
