Authorities say there is “more significant rain to come” in north Queensland while residents of Townsville’s “black zone” suburbs have been told to stay away as floods continue. More than 1.2 metres of rain has been dumped on some locations amid atmospheric conditions similar to those that caused flooding in the region in 2019 and again in 2023.

Meanwhile Melbourne and Adelaide are sweltering under a three-day run of “intensely hot” weather, with a heightened fire risk ahead of a cool change expected late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
