After some delays, EKU pedway looks to open this summer

Work continues on the Eastern Kentucky University pedway crossing the Bypass in Richmond. It’s been an ongoing project with construction delays. Bryan Makinen is the associate vice president for facilities and safety. He said the construction timeline has undergone modifications, but the cost of the pedway project has not changed.

“We’ve been working with the contractor. There have been a few opportunities relative to the vertical clearance of the pedway as well as tolerances with the pedway. The contractor has rectified those and we’re working collectively together to get the pedway completed,” said Makinen.

While no formal completion date has been determined, Makinen said officials hope it can open to foot traffic in early summer. The facilities and safety administrator noted it will connect the north and south portions of the campus including students that will be housed in refurbished student housing.

“Keene Hall is currently under renovation and when that’s complete we’ll have a number of students living in Keene residence hall and this will give them an opportunity to not have to wait for traffic lights and traffic signals at the two intersections that are close by,” said Makinen.

Just this week, one lane of the Bypass was closed off for work on the crossing. Makinen said there should not be a further need to shut down both lanes on the roadway.
