After India vs Pakistan, another change in ODI World Cup schedule on the cards?

NEW DELHI: Expressing concerns regarding both organisational and security aspects, an official from the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has emphasised that hosting two World Cup matches within consecutive days is far from ideal.

The official has expressed the hope that a one-day break between such matches can be arranged. This stance further signals a potential alteration in the schedule for the upcoming ODI showpiece, set to commence in India on October 5.

After a notable delay in the announcement of the schedule in June, the BCCI and ICC recently made substantial adjustments to the plan, including rescheduling nine matches. This included the high-profile encounter between India and Pakistan.

In light of these changes, the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match, initially slated for October 16, advanced by a day to October 15 in Ahmedabad.

Correspondingly, Pakistan's match against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad was shifted from October 12 to October 10.

Additionally, Hyderabad is also set to host the clash between New Zealand and Netherlands on October 9.

Amidst these shifts, the Hyderabad police have voiced reservations about ensuring security for consecutive matches. This development hints at the possibility of yet another modification to the schedule.

"I can't say it would be changed for sure but back to back games are not ideal. I mean if they (BCCI) are reconsidering that will be well in good. We will have to work with security agencies.

"Anyone would want a day in between two World Cup games. We are still engaging with security agencies to see if it is possible or not. At the same time we are also keeping BCCI in the loop. The BCCI is completely aware of what we are trying to do," said an HCA official on condition of anonymity.

However, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said in an official statement that no further changes are likely as it requires involvement of multiple stakeholders.

"I am in charge of Hyderabad venue for WC. If there will be any issue or anything, will try to get it resolved. It is not easy to change the World Cup schedule and it's unlikely to happen. Only BCCI can't change schedule, teams, ICC, all involved," said Shukla, who is also a Congress Rajya Sabha member.

For an international game, the Hyderabad Police deploys between 2000-2500 personnel.

"Deployment also depends on nature of the game and how many people turn up. Police makes those assessments and deploys accordingly," the official added.
