Leaders of Eastern and Southern African regional blocs convened for a historic joint summit to address the escalating conflict in eastern Congo. The summit aimed to find a solution to the crisis caused by the rapid advance of Rwandan-backed rebels, particularly the M23 rebels, who recently captured Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The situation has raised concerns about the potential for a wider war and has resulted in thousands of casualties. Despite announcing a ceasefire, the rebels have continued their march towards the city of Bukavu, further intensifying the conflict.

During the summit in Dar es Salaam, presidents from the region, including Rwanda's Paul Kagame, emphasized the urgency of the situation. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan highlighted the need for immediate action to prevent further deterioration of the crisis.

The joint summit of Eastern and Southern African blocs signifies the continent's deep concern over the conflict and the strained relations between Congo and Rwanda. The blocs have been divided in their approaches to the conflict, with the eastern bloc advocating for dialogue while southern countries support Congo.

Foreign ministers from the blocs have recommended measures such as calling for a cessation of hostilities, an unconditional ceasefire, and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected areas. The conflict has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, with reports of widespread violence, displacement, and human rights abuses.

The international community, including the United States and the International Criminal Court, is closely monitoring the situation and has warned of potential sanctions against officials involved in the conflict. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to historical tensions and the struggle for control over Congo's mineral resources.

The M23 rebels, who are well-trained and well-armed, have emerged as a significant player in the region's complex dynamics. While Congo accuses them of being a Rwandan proxy, Rwanda denies direct involvement in the conflict and cites security concerns as the reason for its actions.

The summit represents a critical opportunity for regional leaders to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict and prevent further escalation of violence in eastern Congo.
