African nations reached a consensus on climate change action as the first Africa Climate Summit drew to a close on Wednesday in Nairobi, Kenya. Hosted by President William Ruto, African leaders discussed how to harness the continent's potential to tackle global warming.
While Africa accounts for the smallest share of global greenhouse gas emissions, it suffers disproportionately from climate change due to resource exploitation by developed nations. At the summit, African leaders called for a "fair playing ground" to access investments needed to combat climate change and a just "multilateral finance architecture" to relieve the continent’s debt burdens. But whether or not the international community heeds the call remains to be seen.
