Port Adelaide pip Sydney as Ollie Florent's crucial kick falls short, St Kilda thump Gold Coast to stay unbeaten

Sydney midfielder Ollie Florent has failed to make the distance with a kick from 50m on the final siren to hand Port Adelaide a dramatic two-point triumph at the SCG.

The Power had snatched the lead less than two minutes earlier when forward Jeremy Finlayson slotted a set shot with a snap on the way to a 9.12 (66) to 9.10 (64) victory on Saturday night.

Finlayson finished with a game-high three goals as the Power kicked four of the last five majors in a remarkable turnaround after trailing by as much as 20 points early in the final term.

The Swans looked to be cruising to a brave win halfway through the final term despite having their defensive pillars Paddy and Tom McCartin both subbed out before half-time due to head knocks.

But goals to Todd Marshall, Connor Rozee, Jed McEntee and then Finlayson shook up the pulsating contest and gave the Power an important second win of the season.

Zac Butters (27 disposals, one goal) and Xavier Duursma (22) battled hard for the Power, while Rozee overcame a slow start to finish with 20 touches and a crucial goal.

It was a cruel outcome for Florent who had been outstanding for the Swans with 33 disposals and an earlier goal, while Chad Warner had also led the resistance when the Power first surged either side of halftime.

Warner finished with 30 touches (19 contested) and two goals, while Luke Parker (22) and Callum Mills (21) were also influential.

The Swans (2-2) will also be sweating on the health of Paddy McCartin after he knocked his head on the ground, then had to be helped from the field and subbed out early in the opening term.

The former number one draft pick has revived his career since joining the Swans as a key defender last year, after his five seasons with St Kilda were marred by eight concussions.

Paddy's younger brother Tom was also concussed when diving for a loose ball and colliding with a Power opponent just before the main break to leave the Swans without their defensive pillars.

Peter Ladhams booted the opening goal and played through the match without major incident after being suspended for a gut punch on Wines the first time he faced his former side last year.

Both teams head to South Australia next for the inaugural Gather Round with Sydney facing Richmond on Friday night, while Port Adelaide host Western Bulldogs on Saturday night.

Meanwhile St Kilda beat Gold Coast to stay unbeaten, while the Western Bulldogs held on for a five-point win over Richmond in the wet at the MCG and Adelaide enjoyed a win over Fremantle.

Saints stay top with impressive win over Suns

Jack Higgins kicked five goals as Mitch Owens and Jack Sinclair starred in the Saints' 17.11 (113) to 8.12 (60) victory at Docklands Stadium on Saturday night.

It was their fourth straight win to start the season, leaving Ross Lyon's new-look outfit as the last side with a perfect record.

St Kilda (4-0) sit two points clear of their nearest rivals Carlton (3-1-0).

Greater tests lie ahead, starting with a clash against flag fancies Collingwood next round.

Second-year forward Owens (27 disposals, two goals) and All-Australian half-back Sinclair (31 disposals) were outstanding in the Saints' latest triumph, set up with a five-goal burst during the second term.

Seb Ross (30 disposals, five clearances, one goal), Brad Hill (22 touches, two goals) and Brad Crouch (34 disposals, six clearances) helped blow Gold Coast away after quarter-time.

But the victory came at a cost when substitute Jack Bytel was helped off the field with a left ankle injury just minutes after being thrust into the game in the final term.

Touk Miller (32 disposals, 10 clearances), Noah Anderson (37 disposals, 10 tackles, seven clearances) and Lachie Weller (30 touches) were among the Suns' best.

Gold Coast lost co-captain Jarrod Witts (soreness) before the opening bounce, leaving debutant Ned Moyle to battle in the ruck against Rowan Marshall.

They started well but failed to capitalise on early territorial dominance as the lead changed hands four times during the first quarter.

Higgins provided the Saints' spark in attack with three goals in the second term as they skipped 22 points clear by half-time.

It was party time in the third quarter as Hill and Owens kicked goals for the highlights reel and the margin ballooned to 47 points.

St Kilda were never seriously tested after the main break as they marked their best start to a season since a 4-0 opening in 2010.

Bulldogs hang on against Tigers in wet-weather thriller

The Marcus Bontempelli-inspired Western Bulldogs have survived an irresistible 15-minute onslaught from Richmond to hang on for a vital five-point win at a rain-drenched MCG.

After leading by 29 points early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs' advantage vanished by half-time as Richmond piled on eight straight goals in a burst of play equal to anything they produced during their recent premiership golden era.

But the Tigers were restricted to just 2.5 in the second half as the Bulldogs settled in defence amid driving rain to prevail 12.17 (89) to 12.12 (84).

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead through a Mitch Hannan snap early in the last quarter, but a Shai Bolton goal with 30 seconds remaining gave Richmond a chance to pinch the game.

But Bontempelli stormed out of the last centre clearance to steer the Bulldogs to safety.

In a further blow for Richmond, star forward Tom Lynch is certain to come under scrutiny from the match review officer for an incident in the first quarter that left Bulldogs defender Alex Keath concussed.

Lynch was on fire early, kicking Richmond's only two goals of the first term, but was barely sighted for the rest of the match.

After the first half produced 18 goals, the teams combined for just five in the last two quarters.

The gutsy win, the Bulldogs' second straight after starting the season 0-2, will delight coach Luke Beveridge.

As well as losing Keath, the Bulldogs had to do it without fellow defender Hayden Crozier for much of the second-half after he injured his back in a friendly-fire collision with Josh Bruce.

Bontempelli set the tone early, having six clearances in the opening term as the Bulldogs' midfield ran riot.

The captain finished with 25 possessions and 11 clearances in a defining performance.

Bontempelli's premiership midfielder Tom Liberatore was everywhere early and managed to kick two goals in the first quarter as his side obliterated the shell-shocked Tigers out of the centre.

Former Richmond captain Trent Cotchin, who was "managed" for this contest, was subbed into the game late in the second quarter after fellow Tigers midfielder Jack Graham damaged a hamstring.

Richmond also opted to rest Cotchin's triple premiership teammate Jack Riewoldt in a move that surprised Beveridge on Friday.

Richmond (1-1-2) will line-up against the Sydney Swans at the Adelaide Oval in Gather Round, while the Bulldogs have Port Adelaide in front of a parochial home crowd.

Crows on the up with Freo scalp

Dawson collected 28 disposals and kicked a goal in the Crows' 17.9 (111) to 10.12 (72) triumph at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

The victory squares Adelaide's win-loss ledger after four rounds but Fremantle, finalists last season, are in the mire with one win and three losses.

Adelaide's Taylor Walker kicked four goals and teammates Izak Rankine and Josh Rachele slotted three each.

Dawson was superb in a roaming role in midfield and defence, winning five clearances, laying six tackles and having five inside 50s and five rebound 50s.

Triple club champion Rory Laird also gathered 28 possessions and Brodie Smith (24 touches) offered great dash from half-back.

Adelaide's Jake Soligo (21, two goals), Chayce Jones (21 touches) and Rory Sloane (23 possessions) also helped overwhelm a lacklustre Fremantle.

Dockers Caleb Serong (28 touches) and Angus Brayshaw (31) were outstanding while Lachie Schultz, Bailey Banfield and Matt Taberner kicked two goals apiece.

Adelaide, with ex-captain Walker kicking two early goals, set the tone early by skipping to a 17-point lead at quarter time, 6.1 to 3.2.

The Crows converted half of their dozen entries into their attacking 50m zone into goals.

Adelaide's dominance continued in the second quarter with skipper Dawson the architect, as his match-high 17 disposals until half-time featured four clearances and three inside 50s.

The Crows kicked four goals to one in the second term to create a commanding six-goal half-time advantage, 10.4 to 4.4.

Fremantle lifted their collective work-rate in the third quarter but couldn't make much of a dent in Adelaide's lead.

Freo's Schultz kicked the visitors' two goals for the term, punctuated by an accurate 50m bomb from Adelaide's influential Dawson.

The skipper's strike was the home side's sole major in the term as the Crows took a 32-point lead into three quarter-time, 11.8 to 6.6.

Adelaide then iced the victory with another six goals to four in the final term to bank consecutive wins.
