AFL free agent McStay's eyes on team prize

In-demand key forward Daniel McStay has put his contract talks "on the backburner" as AFL rivals seek to lure the free agent away from Brisbane.

Collingwood are one of several clubs with their sights on McStay, who will play his 150th game for the Lions against St Kilda

"For me, the contract stuff, I've just kind of put that on the backburner," the 26-year-old told reporters on Friday.

"My manager and the club are in constant talks, so I'm really comfortable with where that sits.

"For me, I've got bigger things to worry about on-field than what's going on off-field.

"We're trying to put ourselves in a position to win a flag and we need to continue to find our form again and be in that premiership form. That's my sole focus."

McStay, originally from Victoria, has reportedly got a five-year contract offer on the table from Brisbane.

"Yeah, it's a big decision, but at the same time I can't really control what's going on off-field," he said.

"All I can control is what I'm doing on-field and just making sure that I'm doing everything I can to be the best player and teammate I can be."

McStay has kicked 14 goals and had eight goal assists in 10 games this season.

He kicked 28 goals last year but was substituted out of the qualifying final because of concussion and sat out as the Lions crashed out of the flag race the following week.

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan was full of praise for McStay, who will line up alongside fellow talls Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood for Brisbane against St Kilda.

It is the first time the Lions will have their three key forwards together on-field in 11 months.

"If you were to give an award for the best teammate, I reckon (McStay) would win it with the way he plays the game," Fagan said.

"There's so much that he does on the field that doesn't end up in a stat."
