AFC Wimbledon manager reflects on potential January recall for Bristol City starlet Ryley Towler

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson refused to rule out the possibility that Bristol City could recall Ryley Towler from his loan spell in January but is sure the club remain delighted with his progress at the League Two club.

Towler, 20, is earning rave reviews for the consistency of his performances at Wimbledon having cemented his position as an integral figure in Jackson's side. He has featured 15 times in all competitions having been deployed as a central defender in a back three, a back four and as a defensive midfielder.

Wimbledon currently sit 15th but are on a run of five games without defeat in the league. Towler's improving form has played a key contribution to that with Jackson claiming his performances are getting better by the game.

It's Towler's fourth loan spell but his first in the Football League following time at Frome Town, Taunton Town and Grimsby Town. City wanted him to gain further first-team experience at a senior level before Pearson considers him for senior selection.

City did include a January recall option in the deal and the question surrounding the club's plans for Towler beyond the New Year were put to Jackson.

Speaking to South London Press, Jackson responded: "They [Bristol City] are really happy with how it has been going for him. They sent him to us because they wanted him to get games and regular football.

“He’s getting that here, and I know for a fact that he is really enjoying his football – he’s loving his time down here with us.

“We’re really happy with him. I’m sure Bristol City are happy with us and the fact that he’s getting the opportunities that he’s getting. Long may that continue.”

Towler's move to Wimbledon suited both parties. Jackson tends to play with a back three with an emphasis on playing out from the back.

Pearson has spoken of his desire to bring in a new defender during the January transfer window with similar individual errors still proving costly on the back of last season. Only four teams have conceded more than City's 29 goals this season although they improved that average before the World Cup break with eight goals against in eight games following Max O'Leary's introduction in goal.

Whether the manager can bolster his backline, particularly following the injuries to Tomas Kalas and Kal Naismith, comes down to finances. Pearson has made it clear there is no money to spend unless a player leaves although refused to rule out the potential of a loan move.

It does raise the possibility of recalling Towler should Pearson feel it necessary although it would feel counterproductive if he returns to sit on the bench or return to the Under-21 squad.

Jackson suggested City were taking their time to consider what was best for Towler during the summer and had to remain patient to get the deal over the line. Now he's reaping the rewards by praising not only his performances but the player's personality and character.

“I spoke with Ryley a few weeks before he ended up signing," he added. “Bristol City had to decide which way they wanted to go with it, and it took a while to get done. I told him how keen we were on bringing him in. Luckily enough, we managed to do it.

“We have had to use him in different positions, and he has played a lot of football since he came through the door.

“Ryley has been brilliant for us – his level of performance has been outstanding. I would agree that his performances have been improving game by game.

“He has been a real reliable signing for us. He’s a great character, too – a great kid to have around the place. He works hard every day and there is no fuss. He has been a pleasure to work with.”
