I was amused to read about Adrian Chiles’s stint of work experience, during which “making tea and coffee was just about the only way I could make myself useful” (What happened when a colleague made me a cup of tea? I almost died of shame, 7 February). Perhaps he is referring to the week he spent on a newspaper in Stratford-upon-Avon, of which I was the fresh-faced editor back in the 90s. I must say, I thought he was rather capable, not just at making hot drinks, but also at generating creative stories. But maybe it was, in fact, his tea and coffee role that set him on the road to stardom.
