Adored pet dog mauled to death after being chased into home by Dogue de Bordeaux

A treasured pet dog died after being chased into its home and mauled by a Dogue de Bordeaux. Jack Russell cross Princess suffered extensive injuries and vets were unable to save her.

Owner Shona O'Sullivan, 53, was left devastated by the attack on her 12-year-old pet which she described as "my world". Shona also suffered bites and scratches to her foot and was treated in hospital following the late night attack.

"I am still in shock and pain," she said. "I can't get my head around that she is gone. Princess was my world. It is devastating."

She told Grimsby Live she had moved to Cleethorpes from Reading six months ago for peace and quiet. "I came for a day out in Cleethorpes and felt it was like home," she said.

Princess was regularly taken for walks along the seafront and every evening they walked in the resort's Sidney Park. The attack occurred at around midnight on Monday and Humberside Police officers are investigating.

Shona, who lived alone with her pet dog, said she has lost her voice due to crying constantly. But she praised the Blue Cross Hospital in Grimsby which tried to save Princess' life.

"I rushed her round to the vets at 1am. I was covered in blood," she said.

"They fed her morphine. But her injuries were not survivable.

"They called me later to say she had died. I had to go to the hospital for a tetanus jab and I am on antibiotics.

"I can't say enough in support of Blue Cross. They were all amazing.

"Right from the moment I rang the intercom at 1am. The service was the best.

"They went above and beyond. They will be getting a donation from me in time.

"But I need to process what has happened and take a few days." She also said the support from new friends in the resort was keeping her going.

The Bordeaux mastiff, called the Dogue de Bordeaux, is not classed as a dangerous breed. But they have been involved in several fatal incidents involving owners and other dogs.
