Adolescence Producers Are Hinting There Could Be A Season Two

A follow-up to the hit Netflix series Adolescence might be in the works, with Brad Pitt‘s production company Plan B Entertainment confirming early talks about the show’s “next iteration”.

The four-episode series, which went viral for its one-take filming and shocking subject matter, tells the story of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) who is accused of fatally stabbing his classmate Katie. It’s a pretty shocking glimpse into the online “manosphere”, incel culture, and bullying, and sparked important conversations about children’s exposure to toxic masculinity online.

It’s also quickly gone up the ranks to become the fourth most-watched English-language series on Netflix since its March 13 release. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer even backed an initiative to stream the series for free in secondary schools across the UK, where Adolescence is set.

Speaking to Deadline on Wednesday, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, co-presidents of Plan B which produced the series along with Warp Films and Matriarch Productions, indicated Adolescence could be set to return.

But, they were quick to clarify, this isn’t likely to continue the existing storyline, such as Jamie’s trial.

Instead, while light on details, Gardner said they’re mulling over the ways they can “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive” in conversations with director Philip Barantini.

The production company is also hoping to rope in Stephen Graham, who co-created the series and starred as Jamie’s dad Eddie, as well as co-writer Jack Thorne.

Last month, Graham hinted the limited series could see a second outing, telling Variety they’d need to “see how the figures are” while his wife and producing partner, Hannah Walters, added that she would happily work with Netflix “all day long”.

But I’m not sure if I’d hold my breath just yet, because Adolescence co-writer Thorne indicated he’s more on the fence about trying to expand the story.

“Jamie’s story is finished. I don’t think there’s anywhere more we can take Jamie, so I don’t think there is a series two,” he told ITV last month.

“Our aim was to try and tell Jamie’s story as fully as we possibly could, and maybe trying to tell [Katie’s] story would dilute that in some way and maybe we would be inadequate for that task.”

Adolescence director Barantini also said the series should be “a standalone thing”.

“I don’t personally (think there should be another series), I think it’s a package of this moment in time, and I think personally, that’s how I feel about it,” he told The Independent in March.

This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a limited series come back for more seasons — but it’ll be interesting to see where they can take this from here.
