Adnan Januzaj statement released as Manchester United graduate left without a club

Ex-Manchester United hopeful Adnan Januzaj has been released by Real Sociedad following an underwhelming stay.

The 27-year-old was tipped for greatness after a breakthrough 2013/14 season at Old Trafford which saw him score twice on his first senior start against Sunderland. He would later be loaned out to the then-Premier League Black Cats in 2016 after a temporary switch to Borussia Dortmund a year earlier.

But his failure to catch the eye at either club saw him shipped out to Real Sociedad in 2017 after five goals in 63 games for United. Januzaj’s woes continued in Spain, enduring a meagre five years at the La Liga club in which time he failed to score double figures in a single season despite regular game time.

This season, the Belgium international netted just five times and tallied only three assists in 44 outings. And as a result of his performances, Real Sociedad decided against handing him a new deal, with the same decision being made over former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal.

A statement from the club said: “Real Sociedad announces that Adnan Januzaj and Nacho Monreal will not continue at the club from next season.

“The Royal Society thanks Adnan Januzaj and Nacho Monreal for their commitment, dedication and effort made during their stay with us, while wishing them the best for their personal and professional future."

In total Januzaj scored just 23 goals in 167 matches for Los Txuri-Urdin. That said, he leaves the club with a 2019/20 Copa del Rey in his collection.
