Adele vowed "never to become a skinny Minnie" as she was "proud to represent the majority of women" before her dramatic weight loss.
The pop superstar stunned fans this week by showing off her transformation after shedding a reported three stone in just six months.
However, many of her followers will be surprised by Adele's decision to slim down as she previously insisted she was "proud" to be curvy.
Back in 2012, she told People magazine: "I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines.
"I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that."
She echoed the sentiment in an interview on US TV show 60 Minutes, saying: "I’ve never seen magazine covers and music videos and been like ‘I need to look like that to be a success'.
"I don’t want to be some skinny mini with my t**s out.
"I really don’t want to do it and I don’t want people confusing what it is that I am about."
She added that she didn't want to live her life on a diet or have her routine dictated by gym sessions.
Adele added: "I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down.
"And I don’t want that in my life. I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me."
Three years later, an 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Adele pondered whether she would have been as successful if she hadn't been curvy.
She mused" "Would I show my body off if I was thinner? Probably not, because my body is mine.
"But sometimes I'm curious to know if I would have been as successful if I wasn't plus-size. I think I remind everyone of themselves."
The singer first started improving her diet after the birth of her son Angelo in 2012.
For the sake of her voice, she ditched the 10 cups of sugary tea she used to drink each day and cut out alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine all "spicy, citrusy, and tangy" foods.
But the following year she was starting to go to the gym more, admitting she wanted to be in shape for her tour following the release of most recent album 25.
By 2017 she was believed to have lost more than two stone, reportedly due to The Sirtfood Diet, which sees slimmers fill up on plant-based foods like kale, buckwheat, green tea and tumeric.
Adele reportedly has regular personal trainer sessions and pilate classes, as well as enjoying a Stairmaster-like class called Rise Nation.
