Singer Adele might have a name known to millions around the globe but she's finally let slip fans have been mispronouncing it for years.
And it took a question from a fellow Cockney during an interview to coincide with the I Drink Wine video release for Adele to share how her name should be pronounced.
Speaking on Happy Hour with Adele with Benito Skinner, a woman appeared on screen from London which left viewers in the studio and at home sharing in a moment of revelation.
Adele, 34, was delighted and exclaimed: “Where's she from, Enfield? She said my name perfectly!”
While many fans have referred to her as "uh-dell," Adele actually prefers a faint lilt at the end of her name to align with her North London accent. As she noted with a slight emphasis on the second syllable: "uh-dale."
The somewhat surprising confession comes after she opened up about the decision not to use her surname.
Her full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, takes her mother's maiden name as her father Marc Evans, left when Adele was two.
The name Adele, despite sounding French, derives from the German name Adel meaning ‘nobility’, or Adal, which translates to ‘noble’.
She told YouTuber NikkieTutorials: "I could have never used my surname. Adele Adkins does not have the same ring as Adele."
She previously told how her last name sounded 'drab' and rather than invent a stage name she dropped her last night entirely.
Meanwhile the single-named star is set to begin her series of show’s at Caesars Palace from November 18, which will run until March 2023.
Her album 30 was the biggest-selling album of 2021, and topped off a come back where she performed I Drink Wine at the Brit Awards in February, scooping single of the year for Easy On Me.
In her acceptance speech she gushed, before the sound cut off for a few seconds.
Shouting out the other nominees in the category as the sound came back, the former BRIT School student continued: "Dave, Ed, Sam; I love being in your company.
"I genuinely love being an artist. I can't believe it's my job."
