Adele praises fellow BRIT Award winners amid row over gender-neutral awards

Adele has congratulated her fellow Brit Award winners and nominees in a gushing social media post after appearing to question the music ceremony's gender-neutral approach this year.

The singer-songwriter, 33, won three awards at the event on Tuesday night, including becoming the first ever recipient of the controversially genderless Artist of the Year award.

She has since reflected on the ceremony in a post to her 49 million followers on Instagram yesterday, in which she paid tribute to organisers as well as those nominated for awards.

The post featured a series of photos which documented the evening, with the first showing Adele posing on the red carpet in front of fans - with many of them in face masks.

The second showed a hair stylist attending to the singer, who was stood backstage in chiffon dress, with the sequined gown understood to have been by designer brand Valentino.

And the final photo saw the acclaimed musician holding her coveted awards, with her photographed laughing.

She wrote alongside them: "What a night! Thank you @brits, thank you Sally and Tom for being so accommodating."

"Thank you to everyone who was there in the crowd, you were so loud and loving. Congratulations to all the other winners and nominees. Keep smashing it," she added.

Adele - whose latest album 30 was released last year - took home awards for Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. Her third was for Easy on Me, which won Song of the Year.

She became the first ever recipient of the Artist of the Year award, which consolidated the previously gendered awards of British Male Solo Artist and British Female Solo Artist.

During her acceptance speech for the award, she seemed to make a jibe about this, saying: "I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist."

Her remarks have divided opinion, with journalist Piers Morgan, 56, having recently waded into the debate on social media in defence of the award-winning singer.

The decision to make all awards gender-neutral sparked controversy when it was announced in November last year, with gendered awards now scrapped from the event.

It meant that this year Adele competed against the likes of Ed Sheeran, 30, for Artist of the Year - whereas previously she'd have instead been up for British Female Solo Artist.

Many awards were already gender-neutral though, and have been for decades, including Song of the Year. Adele and Ed would have been competing in that category anyway.
