An Adelaide man who pleaded guilty to abducting a four-month-old baby during a carjacking was still "strung out" on drugs when he confessed, a court has heard.
Ilias Sammy Latsis is now attempting to withdraw his guilty pleas meaning that the case may go to trial.
The 37-year-old was arrested in May after he allegedly stole a Honda Jazz with a baby boy in the back seat from outside a deli in Klemzig.
The baby was reunited with his mother two hours later after the car was found abandoned in Enfield.
Mr Latsis was taken to the city watch house where he was interviewed the following day, the court heard.
Magistrate Briony Kennewell told the court that Mr Latsis's previous lawyer, Stephen Ey, said his client was under the influence of drugs when he entered his guilty pleas.
"Mr Ey has sworn in an affidavit that [his client] was strung out," Magistrate Kennewell said.
The court heard the prosecution did not dispute that Mr Latsis had consumed drugs and that they would have been in his system at the time.
Magistrate Briony Kennewell also said the prosecution would have to prove that the defendant was aware that the child was in the car.
"The question of his awareness is an important issue," she said.
Mr Latsis also pleaded guilty to another car theft which took place earlier in May.
The matter will return to court next month.
