Long-awaited work to create additional space at a North Lanarkshire nursery is just about complete.
As part of the early learning and childcare expansion programme, adaptations have been made at the Craigneuk Family Learning Centre on Glasgow Road to increase the number of local children in Wishaw who can attend the nursery.
At a recent meeting of the Education and Families Committee, a senior officer confirmed that all adaptations at the building would be complete by the end of May.
The repurposed Family Learning Centre creates capacity for a further 16 full-time equivalent places at the early years facility.
Scottish Conservative councillor for Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig, Nathan Wilson said: “It is great news that the long-overdue works to create additional nursery capacity at the Craigneuk Family Learning Centre to allow more local children in Wishaw to attend his fantastic early years setting has finally reached the point of completion.
“The council has advised that significant progress has now been made and with the final remaining tasks expected to reach a conclusion soon.
“When it comes to the planned new nursery in Wishawhill, it remains stuck in the Groundhog Day cycle of unacceptable delay and with any hint that delivery of the early years centre might finally be approaching quickly snuffed out by another miserable period of setbacks.
“Considering the latest in a long list of disappointments over the past three years, it is difficult to retain any real confidence about what is happening with the project.
“I will continue to scrutinise and hold the council to account over the issue.”
