Adam Thielen reportedly expected to play in season opener

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young will already be down one key weapon for his NFL regular-season debut, with wideout DJ Chark having been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. But the bleeding may be stopping right there.

According to NFL Network national reporter Cameron Wolfe, fellow receiver Adam Thielen is expected to play on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. The 33-year-old veteran, who has been dealing with an ankle issue, was listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report for the week.

Having the former two-time Pro Bowler in uniform could prove vital for Carolina’s chances in starting the campaign. Not only is Thielen the most decorated pass catcher in the offense’s arsenal, but he’s also built up quite the chemistry with Young—as evidenced by the rookie’s lone (but harmonious) touchdown pass of the preseason.

Outside of Chark and Thielen, the Panthers are currently carrying four other receivers on their active roster—rookie Jonathan Mingo, Terrace Marshall Jr., Laviska Shenault Jr. and Ihmir Smith-Marsette.
