Adam Taggart's impressive performance for Perth Glory has caught the attention of Socceroos coach Graham Arnold, leading to his inclusion in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon. Taggart, who has netted 14 goals in 18 A-League Men matches this season, is set to earn his first cap since September 2022.
The Socceroos will face Lebanon in Parramatta on March 21 and in Canberra on March 26, with two victories securing their advancement to the final round of qualification. The return of creative midfielder Ajdin Hrustic, who has been in fine form after securing regular playing time at Heracles Almelo in the Eredivisie, will provide a significant boost to the team.
In addition to Taggart and Hrustic, Brandon Borrello of Western Sydney Wanderers has also been recalled after missing the Asian Cup due to a foot injury. Their presence adds depth to an already talented forward line that includes Mitchell Duke, Kusini Yengi, Bruno Fornaroli, and uncapped striker John Iredale.
Coach Arnold expressed confidence in the team's growth following their experience at the Asian Cup, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent and building squad depth for future success on the international stage. Injuries have ruled out several players, including Aziz Behich, Martin Boyle, Aiden O'Neill, and Marco Tilio, while Jamie Maclaren's recent form kept him out of the squad.
The squad for the qualifiers features a mix of experienced players and promising talents across all positions, with Mathew Ryan, Joe Gauci, and Thomas Glover in goal; defenders Nathaniel Atkinson, Jordan Bos, Cameron Burgess, Thomas Deng, and others; midfielders Keanu Baccus, Jackson Irvine, Riley McGree, and more; and forwards Craig Goodwin, Sam Silvera, and others.
