Democratic Sen.-elect Adam Schiff expressed strong concerns about former Rep. Matt Gaetz's potential appointment as attorney general during an interview with CNN. Schiff stated that Gaetz is not only unqualified but also disqualified for the role due to various allegations against him.
Schiff highlighted allegations of child sex-trafficking, illicit drug use, and obstruction of an investigation surrounding Gaetz. He emphasized Gaetz's lack of experience in the Justice Department and pointed out that Gaetz has been the subject of investigations by the department.
Gaetz is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Gaetz has faced accusations of engaging in sexual activities with a minor and paying for sex. The Department of Justice conducted a sex-crimes investigation into Gaetz but ultimately decided not to pursue criminal charges.
Schiff suggested that Trump's nomination of controversial figures like Gaetz is a deliberate test for Congress. He argued that confirming nominees like Gaetz would demonstrate Congress's willingness to comply with Trump's wishes without question.
Schiff also criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson for his handling of the ethics report on Gaetz. Johnson has faced scrutiny for his decision not to release the report, with some questioning whether his actions are influenced by pressure from Trump.
