Adam Sandler's 'worst movie' with 'most irritating character ever' comes to Netflix

Want to see one of Adam Sandler’s ‘worst movies?’ It’s dropping on Netflix UK today (September 1).

The comedy actor is known for his roles in hits like The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and more recently Murder Mystery with Jennifer Aniston, which became the most watched film in Netflix history.

But despite being in the game for five decades, the 55-year-old hasn’t always got it right.

Little Nicky, available to watch on Netflix now, is one of his lowest rated films - and the most panned by critics.

Even a cast which included heavyweights like Harvey Keitel, Rhys Ifans and Patricia Arquette couldn’t save it from bombing at the box office.

The movie, which came out in 2000 and cost $85 million to make, was billed as Sandler’s first box office flop.

It was even nominated for five Razzie awards including Worst Actor, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.

But if it passed you by in the early Noughties when films like Dude, Where’s My Car?, Scary Movie and Road Trip came out, you can catch up now.

Starring Sandler in the lead role, Nicky plays the son of the devil (Harvey Keitel) who wants him to get involved in the ‘family business’ – causing a new hell on earth.

As his mum (Patricia Arquette) is an angel, he is in a pickle whether to be good or evil.

The film synopsis says: “In a perfect world, he’d be happy to head-bang in his room all day to heavy metal music.

“But no, his mum is an angel, his old man is the devil, and like all good fathers, he insists that Nicky get involved in the ‘family business’.

“Nicky could think of 666 things he’d rather do than corrupting souls or spewing evil, but when his father’s command over Hades is threatened by his bullying older brothers, it’s up to unbalanced Nicky to restore the balance between Good and Evil on earth.”

But even the star-studded cast didn’t stop the movie getting a rating of just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Little Nicky was even branded Sandler’s “most irritating” character to date.

One critic wrote: “Easily Sandler’s worst film, and an ill-assembled, cretinous wreck it is.”

“Sandler’s performance brings to the screen the intentionally irritating character since Jerry Lewis used to insist on wearing fake buck teeth,” said another.

“Despite the presence of a large, talented cast, the jokes in Little Nicky are dumb, tasteless and not that funny, and Adam Sandler’s character is grating to watch,” a third observed.

“Creating perhaps his most irritating persona to date, Sandler manages to get through the entire movie with barely a single gag, save for a few uninspired chuckles,” a fourth fumed.

A fifth said: “I can enjoy a dumb, raunchy comedy as much as the next classless viewer. But it has to be funny, and Little Nicky isn’t.”

While a sixth chimed in: “The wait for funny scenes feels like an eternity spent in hell.”

But die-hard Sandler fans had a different opinion with one saying: “It’s really funny, sometimes even clever, and I’ll probably burn in whatever circle is reserved for film critics for saying it.”

Another added: “It’s certainly funny, and may be Sandler’s most consistently funny film since Happy Gilmore.”
