Adam Montgomery set for Celtic loan transfer as he gets ready to join St Johnstone

Adam Montgomery is set to depart Celtic on loan as he gets ready to join St Johnstone for the new Premiership campaign.

The Hoops youngster spent time on loan at divison rivals Aberdeen last term but he is set to hook up with Callum Davidson's men after the Saints boss agreed a deal to take him to Perth. The 19-year-old will jet off to Spain to meet up with his new team-mates on Tuesday - and could even face his former Dons colleagues on Friday during a bounce game in Murcia.

St Johnstone - who retained their top flight status following a play-off win over Championship outfit Caley Thistle - needed a new left wing-back as injuries to Callum Booth and Tony Gallagher are set to keep them out for the first part of the season. Both players are expected to miss the Premier Sports Cup group stage campaign and could remain sidelined as the Premiership season kicks off at the end of July.

Celtic kid Montgomery will provide cover in that position while he can also be deployed higher up the park, to give Davidson some versatility. Ange Postecoglou handed him some minutes early on at the start of his Parkhead reign but sent him out on loan to Aberdeen to gain more valuable first team action.

However, his time on the park was restricted due to a hamstring injury. St Johnstone have already added the likes of Drey Wright and Andrew Considine this summer with Graham Carey also set to formally complete his move when his CSKA Sofia contract ends in the next few days.

The 33-year-old is out in Spain training with his new team.
