Actress Anne Heche dies after being taken off life support nine days after car ploughed into house

Actress Anne Heche has died after she was "peacefully taken off life support" after being involved in a horror car accident nine days ago.

Ms Heche suffered a "severe anoxic brain injury" in the incident.

A representative for the 53-year-old confirmed her death to the PA news agency last night.

She had been in hospital since the crash in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles on August 5.

The actress' Mini Cooper was said to have sped out of control and ploughed into a house, leaving her with severe burns and a brain injury.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said it had concluded its investigation on Sunday.

"There will be no further investigative efforts made in this case," it said.

"Any information or records that have been requested prior to this turn of events will still be collected as they arrive as a matter of formalities and included in the overall case. When a person suspected of a crime expires, we do not present for filing consideration."

Ms Heche had been classified as "legally dead according to California law" after the crash but kept on life support in case her organs could be donated.

Ms Heche's family said they had "lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend".

The actress, who rose to fame in the late 90s and starred in movies such as Donnie Brasco, Wag The Dog, and I Know What You Did Last Summer, is survived by her two sons, Atlas and Homer.

She also won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1991 for her role as identical twin sisters in the NBC soap opera Another World, and starred in the 1998 adventure comedy Six Days Seven Nights with Harrison Ford and played alongside Demi Moore and Cher in the HBO TV movie If These Walls Could Talk.
