Actor Paul Mescal says he is 'flying the flag' for Colin Farrell to win Best Actor at Oscars

Kildare actor Paul Mescal has revealed that he is rooting for fellow Irish actor Colin Farrell to win the Best Actor award at Sunday’s Oscars, an award that both are in the running for.

The Maynooth actor grabbed a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Scottish dad Calum in the acclaimed film Aftersun, which follows the story of Sophie who is played by Frankie Corio and she reminisces on the last holiday she had with her young father Callum, played by Mescal.

Farrell, on the other hand, is up for the same award but due to his role in the award-winning film The Banshees of Inisherin, a film that has already gained recognition at the Golden Globes with three awards.

Farrell plays Pádraic Súilleabháin, one of two lifelong friends who find themselves at odds when Brendan Gleeson ends their friendship abruptly. For his role in the film, Farrell is one of the favourites to win the Best Actor award at the Oscars.

It looks as if there won’t be any falling out if Farrell does win the award however, with Paul Mescal admitting during Screentime with John Fardy this week that he is honoured to be nominated alongside Farrell, and that he would be “flying the flag” for him at the awards show.

“I’m flying the flag for Colin to be honest,” Mescal said during the radio show, which was also shared on social media.

“I think his performance in Banshees is just one of my favourites in quite a while so to be nominated in a category with him, I take great pride in that.”
