Actor Eddie Marsan has fired back at a Twitter troll who boasted about being friends with someone who bullied him at college. And the screen star received a huge response after posting his cutting comeback to the cruel jibe.
Earlier this week the 54-year-old, who's appeared in films such as The World's End, War Horse, and Gangs Of New York, spotted a tweet from a person claiming to know one of his old classmates from printing college in south London. In it the man described how, on Marsan's first day in lessons, the lecturer had introduced him, saying: "This is Eddie, be nice to him."
The tweeter claimed his pal had "flicked [Marsan's] ears from behind and started singing 'Eddie the Elephant packed his trunk'." The post was met with a host of criticism from those who dubbed it "spiteful" and "cruel".
But it was Marsan's own cutting reply which drew the biggest amount of attention. He posted, "Yeah, I was bullied relentlessly at printing college, it was awful. I remember your mate doing that. I’m glad you find it funny.
"If he wants to know how I am now he can just Google me. I have a beautiful wife, four wonderful kids, and I've been in over 120 films. How’s he doing?"
And the responses soon started coming thick and fast, particularly from those who've also known what it's like to have been bullied in their younger years. "Been there. Oh Eddie I just love this reply," replied one. "And what a fine actor you are as well."
Another added, "The young Eddie would be so proud of you, what you’ve achieved and the legend that you are. I was bullied too and it stays with you - much love."
Meanwhile, a third person posted@ "Good for you, Eddie. Had same bullying at school... and where are those people now? Keep up the great work mate."
