Actor and writer Cush Jumbo’s lockdown culture recommendations, from Legally Blonde to The Archers

In a new series, London’s leading arts figures reveal the books, films, TV and more they're loving in lockdown.

Actor and writer Cush Jumbo gave us her recommendations, from classic movies to podcasts.

Film

My husband and I are doing this thing where we get to choose a movie that the other person hasn’t seen and force them to watch it: neither of us is allowed to refuse. This means that I will soon be forced to watch London Has Fallen, but that will be so worth it when he is forced to watch Legally Blonde and finally recognises that Reese Witherspoon is one of the finest comedy actors to have ever graced Hollywood.

Books

Love in the Time of Cholera or 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez are both so beautiful and romantic. Also for my son, who’s two, we’re reading all the Meg and Mog books and anything by Tony Ross. I Want My Potty! is a favourite.

TV

I’m rewatching some classic British comedy such as Nighty Night by Julia Davis.

Podcasts

Beautiful Anonymous is brilliant — a different stranger calls in each show and just chats to the host about their life. The Motherhood Sessions is great so you can stop beating yourself up about your mothering skills during this time. And I love The Archers. Don’t listen to the haters, I love hanging out in Ambridge and hearing all the village gossip, plus there’s an episode every day!
