Activists raise funds for John MacLean statue with St Andrew's Day event

ACTIVISTS have raised more than £450 to contribute towards the thousands needed for a statue of Scotland’s “greatest socialist”.

Destiny Yes Perth Hub hosted a St Andrew's Day coffee morning to raise funds for John MacLean's statue.

The John MacLean Statue Campaign - which can be donated to here -  launched in January and has so far raised around £14,000.

A fresh Crowdfunder has been launched to raise the remaining £44,480 needed to see a statue of Maclean erected in Glasgow's city centre.

In an update sent to The National, one of the organisers, Linda Boyle, said: "The weather was kind to us, so my husband, Kevin was outside the hub with a bucket and leaflets and the local pub chipped in 50 quid.

"A good time was had by all with Scottish music on inside the hub and wee Saltires given to children outside. At day's end we tallied up £450."

The campaign has said it held a meeting with Glasgow City Council's provost in the City Chambers and reached an agreement for the statue to be sited close to the McLennan Arch at Glasgow Green on the Saltmarket.

The inscription on the statue is to be: "I am not here, then, as the accused; I am here as the accuser of capitalism dripping with blood from head to foot."

Who is John MacLean?

John MacLean was a schoolteacher and one of Scotland’s most important socialists.

A number of events were held to mark 100 years since his death last year.

He played an important role in the Red Clydeside movement and was an early supporter of Scottish independence.

A statement on the crowdfunding campaign’s website explains that the total funds sought for the project is £58,480 but that it has already received a generous donation of £10,000 from a MacLean supporter who “wished to remain anonymous”
