AC Milan, a prominent club in Italy, has made history in European football by becoming the first club to guarantee contract renewals for players who become pregnant during the final year of their contracts. This groundbreaking initiative includes providing support for childcare, coverage for expenses related to their children, and a companion.

The move by AC Milan aligns with the broader push for better rights for players, following FIFA's introduction of new standards in May to protect pregnant female footballers. The Italian Serie A, which turned professional in the 2022-23 season, is set to expand from 10 teams to 13 for the 2025-26 campaign.

In a statement on their official website, AC Milan announced that they will ensure automatic contract renewals for female players in the event of pregnancy during the final season of their contracts. This innovative maternity policy goes beyond current regulations to provide protections during pregnancy and early childhood.

According to the 2017 FIFPRO Global Employment Report, only 2% of female players interviewed across four continents had children, with 47% expressing a willingness to leave football to start a family. AC Milan's new policy aims to support female players and professionals in their development journey, creating an environment that enables them to make significant life choices.

Aside from the automatic contract renewals, AC Milan will provide assistance with childcare during sports activities, support for travel expenses for children and a companion, access to professionals in psycho-pedagogical support, physiotherapy, and nutrition, and the option to involve external experts as needed.

The club engaged players from its First Team and Primavera Team in the policy development process, emphasizing inclusivity and safety for all players and staff members. Elisabet Spina, Head of Women's Football at AC Milan, highlighted the club's commitment to the well-being of its female players and staff members.

Giorgio Furlani, AC Milan’s CEO, expressed pride in the project, emphasizing the club's attention to important matters for all members of the Rossoneri family. The club aims for this initiative to set a standard at a national and international level, fostering an environment in football where individuals can freely make important personal decisions.
