Abu Dhabi explosions: Loud bangs heard near shopping mall as smoke rises from building

A major explosion struck at a high rise building in the centre of Abu Dhabi, initially sparking fears of a possible terrorist attack.

Footage captured a deafening bang and a large orange fireball flash near the top of the down town skyscraper as sirens sounded.

Witnesses claimed to have heard two explosions.

WAM state news agency said in a statement the explosion was caused by a gas container erupting inside the building on Hamdan Street.

It said the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority rushed to the scene at 00.09am local time on Wednesday and put out the resultant fire, with no casualties caused.

The agency added: "The teams managed to control the situation after extinguishing the fire and safely vacating the residents."

Cooling procedures were being undertaken to minimise the damage.

It comes just weeks after the United Arab Emirates defence ministry said it destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles targeting the gulf country.

One video from today's incident showed dozens of emergency response vehicles having descended on the scene.

The explosion is said to have occurred 20km from the hotel of the Brazillian football team Palmerias, according to local media.

Earlier in the evening the team beat Al Ahly 2-0 at the Al Nahyan Stadium.

The Brazilian team will face the winner of Chelsea vs Al-Hilal, who play on Wednesday.

Abu Dhabi is set to play host to UEFA's Club World Cup Competition in the coming days.

One man said on Twitter: "Everyone is talking about the explosions in Abu Dhabi, it was next to our hotel, it looks like fire.

"But we definitely heard two explosions."

On January 24, the UAE’s defence ministry said it destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles targeting the gulf country, with no casualties, WAM reported.

“The remnants of the intercepted ballistic missiles fell in separate areas around Abu Dhabi,” the statement added.

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement said on January 17 that it had carried out an attack on the United Arab Emirates after authorities in the Gulf state reported two fires in the capital Abu Dhabi.
