Ally McCoist branded the red card shown to Rangers defender Robin Propper as "absolute nonsense".
The Dutch centre-back was sent off after just 12 minutes in the Europa League quarter-final first leg tie against Athletic Bilbao.
Propper clearly fouled Inaki Williams on the edge of the area at Ibrox but was initially only shown a yellow card.
Referee Istvan Kovacs was then called to the VAR monitor to review his decision and upgraded the punishment to a red card.
Propper was adjudged to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity which is punishable only by a red card.
IFAB laws state that a red card must be produced for denying clear goal-scoring opportunities other than when fouls are committed inside the box - where the double jeopardy rule comes into effect should a player be attempting to play the ball.

"By the letter of the law, it is probably the correct decision," said McCoist. "But you ask anybody who has played the game at any level whatsoever, should that be a red card, and the answer emphatically will be no.
"I actually think it is a lack of common sense by the officials, they'll say they are going by the laws of the game. We all understand it, by that interpretation, he is making the right decision.
"But, in common sense terms, it is wrong.
"Here is my question to you, if that is inside the box he doesn't get sent off? How daft is that!
"You've effectively got two different laws, nonsense. Absolute nonsense. Crazy, isn't it. Tough call for Rangers."
