'Absolute farce' - Tottenham fans rage over Cristiano Ronaldo nomination amid Son Heung-min snub

Tottenham fans have made their feelings known on Twitter after the Professional Footballers' Association announced the nominees for the 2022 Men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year. Harry Kane has been nominated for the award, though teammate - and 2021/22 Premier League joint top goalscorer - Son Heung-min has missed out on the shortlist, despite his own impressive individual season.

The striking duo were critical towards the north London side's resurgence under Antonio Conte, who guided the club towards Champions League qualification. However, the South Korea international was left out, with Kane, Kevin De Bruyne, Sadio Mane Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo receiving nominations instead.

Son's omission from contention for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award has caused concern among fans. The Lilywhites' fanbase believe that Ronaldo is unworthy of a nomination, and should instead be replaced by the Spurs forward.

The 29-year-old scored 23 non-penalty goals in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign - five more than any other player. The Manchester United striker scored 15 non-penalty goals.

Earlier this month, Gary Neville urged Manchester United to take a look at Son ahead of the upcoming transfer window. Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, when asked whether he'd like Kane at Old Trafford, Neville said: "100% if you could get him.

"I said at the start of last season, he’s gold. I've worked with him for four years, he's absolute gold. He's never ever going to let you down. He's reliable, even if he misses a chance or two, the example he sets to others, he's not a shouter or bawls on the pitch. I wouldn;t move him [Cristiano Ronaldo] out, but if you can get Harry Kane to Man United, you'd take him."

"They won’t get him, they absolutely won’t get him. Should Man United take Son? Yeah," Neville added. "They’ve only got one centre-forward, Martial's gone."

The former Red Devils defender finished by outlining that Ronaldo will be eventually sidelined and moved on at United, alluding that either Son or Kane can fill the No.7's boots. Neville said: "That’s going to have to happen at some point."
