Leeds Bradford Airport was thrown into "chaos" this morning after every passenger had to be evacuated due to a fire alarm.
The airport was evacuated shortly before 6am this morning (Friday) after passengers were already waiting in queues to get through security and check in for their morning flights.
All passengers were asked to wait at the front of Leeds Bradford Airport, with one video showing that some had taken out their pint of beer out with them to sip while they waited. The airport has said that there were no planned fire drills this morning and that "passengers were evacuated in line with our safety protocols".
One passenger named Rachel tweeted saying it was "absolute carnage", adding: "Just got through security after an hour wait, just about to sit down and fire alarm went off!!! Everyone evacuated!"
The crowd was allowed back in to the airport around 30 minutes later, though people at the site have said that those who had already got through to the waiting area are now having to go through security checks again, leading to more queueing.
One person wrote on Twitter: "Absolute carnage at Leeds Bradford Airport as an evacuation leads to security doors being opened and airside passengers mixing with unchecked. On top of the already long check-in, every single person had to start again... including staff."
Others said that the delays have not been too bad, with Rachel saying that her flight had been delayed by 30 minutes as a result and another person tweeting: "Less than half an hour later and we’re back inside after the fire alarm. The world keeps turning."
A spokesperson for Leeds Bradford Airport said: “LBA was evacuated early this morning due to an unplanned fire alarm. We are investigating and have worked hard to return the terminal to normal operations.”
