An Aboriginal man has died at a prison in Western Australia.

Paramedics tried to revive the 46-year-old after he was found unresponsive in his cell in the infirmary at Casuarina Prison south of Perth.

Preliminary reports indicate no suspicious circumstances, the justice department said, but police will investigate and prepare a report for the coroner as is mandatory for all deaths in custody.

The 46-year-old was found mid-afternoon on Christmas Day at Casuarina Prison, in south Perth.

Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce offered his condolences to the family.
