Abolish all smart motorways: Nottinghamshire Live writes to the Secretary of State for Transport

Nottinghamshire Live is joining bereaved families in calling for smart motorways to be abolished.

We launched our campaign last week, speaking to families who have lost loved ones on stretches of the M1 in Nottinghamshire with no hard shoulder.

Widow Wendy Steer told us smart motorways are "the worst thing that has ever been built" after she lost her 53-year-old husband Andrew in January last year after his van hit a stationary lorry.

And she is not alone. Bereaved families are calling for the Government not only to stop the construction of new motorways - as they already have done - but to revert those in existence by putting a hard shoulder back in.

We support them in this call, and Nottinghamshire Live Editor Natalie Fahy and Senior Reporter Olimpia Zagnat have written a letter to the Secretary of State for Transport Mark Harper to request he meets with bereaved families and hears their stories.
