Aberdeen transfer latest as McGarry makes way on loan and McGrath eyed by two rivals

It was unlucky 13 for Aberdeen and Jimmy Thelin in the Scottish Premiership as a 3-0 defeat from St Mirren extended their dismal league run last weekend.

The Pittodrie hierarchy have already moved to try back their manager throughout the January transfer window in a bid to escape this dreadful situation.

Latvian captain Kristers Tobers has joined from Swiss Super League side Grasshopper Club Zurich, with the Dons spending a significant six-figure fee.

And the same has been done to bring versatile defender Alexander Jensen to the Granite City from Swedish outfit IF Brommapojkarna on a four-year deal.

Jeppe Okkels and Alfie Dorrington are also January additions, on-loan from Preston North End and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

But yet Aberdeen are still leaking goals for fun and have remarkably only found the net once in their last seven Premiership matches.

Aberdeen director of football Steven Gunn is in discussions with several targets and Aberdeen hope to have a couple of new additions in the door before their visit to Hibernian on Saturday.

Meanwhile, left-back James McGarry has penned a loan switch to Greek Super League side Athens Kallithea as he searches for more game time.

“With Jack returning from injury and Alexander joining us, opportunities for James will be limited and he is at an important stage of his career where he needs regular minutes on the pitch”, said Dons boss Thelin.

“He’s going to a competitive league where there is a lot to play for so we’ll monitor his progress and believe this will be a really valuable loan for the player.”

(Image: SNS Group) Jamie McGrath is among the out-of-contract players at Aberdeen. And reports state that the Republic of Ireland midfielder is attracting interest from both Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian, as his contract approaches its conclusion at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old, who is currently ruled out long-term with a shoulder injury, has been in discussions with Aberdeen regarding a new deal for several months now; however, no agreement has been reached to date.

Thelin was probed whether he would look to find a replacement for McGrath this month, which he replied: “It’s also in the mix.

“You also have to think about the long-term and trust the players here and try to find solutions with the squad you have. And don’t panic.

“But let’s see what we’re going to do. If we’re going to have some more [incomings] or not in the window this time.”

Jack MacKenzie, Duk, Angus MacDonald, and Ross Doohan are all nearing the end of their current contracts.

Asked about the negotiations during a recent press conference, Thelin said: “I know that his agent and Steven [Gunn] are speaking. Let’s see what’s happening. I know the process is there and that’s what I know.”
