Aberdeen manager assesses two debutants, admits he wants to hug one player

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin admitted that he wanted to "hug" goalkeeper Ross Doohan, who made a crucial penalty save to deny Heart of Midlothian all three points in a tense 0-0 draw at Pittodrie.

The former Celtic shot-stopper denied Jorge Grant from 12-yards during second half stoppage time and stopped the Dons from losing a sixth consecutive Scottish Premiership encounter.

Aberdeen remain winless in 11 games now and visit Rangers next.

“I think with the challenging time that we have been in with losing games, you have to stop losing," Thelin said.

"That's the first thing. Of course we tried to win today. I think the start of the game was really positive. I think we were stable for 60 to 65 minutes but Hearts were better than us in the last part of the game.

“The save Ross did was an amazing save, it's so high quality. In that moment when we are on this challenging time and get a penalty against you on the 93rd minute and Ross saves it then you have to use that positive energy and try to build from there now looking forward to the next game.

"I'm so happy for Ross and also for us because it was so, so important to save that one.

"Everybody knows that we have do better. We see some parts of the game today that we controlled better with the ball, but still we need to arrive with much more players inside the box when we are trying to score ourselves and we have a little bit of a journey to do that.

"We will find a way back. Sometimes when you are in a challenging time you have to believe even more and try even more, don't get stressed, believe in what you are doing, and keep fighting for it."

(Image: Sky Sports) January recruits Jeppe Okkels and Kristers Tobers were given first Aberdeen starts against Hearts.

Centre-back Tobers, who partnered Sivert Heltne Nilsen in defence, came close with an effort during the early exchanges of the league clash and showed early glimpses that he's a worthy investment.

However, it was a fairly ineffective debut for on-loan winger Okkels, who hasn't played much football over the past year.

Speaking to Red TV, Thelin said: “He's [Tobers] a player that we have had to talk to and be careful because he is coming between seasons. He has done only one training with his former team and one-and-a-half training with us. We have to take care and protect him so he doesn't get any setbacks.

"From that background, the way he performed today, we are really pleased with what he did. How he was composed, how he played with the ball, and also how he communicates and helped the other players to be better.”

“Jeppe took responsibility but didn’t get the perfect opportunities," the Aberdeen boss added.
