Abbas Urges France for Initiative on Palestinian Cause

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (DPA)

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called Saturday on France, the current chair of the European Union Council, to launch effective initiatives in an effort to resolve the Palestinian cause.

He made his remarks during a telephone call with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Abbas underscored the importance of Paris’ role and referred to the efforts the EU and its member states can make, in coordination with relevant international and regional parties, in this regard.

Abbas and Macron discussed the latest developments, the critical situation in Palestine and ways to bolster bilateral ties, as well as relations with the EU, WAFA reported.

Abbas urged the international community to take deterrent measures against Israeli practices “because the situation on the ground is no longer acceptable.”

He briefed him on the ongoing Israeli escalations against the Palestinian people, particularly in Jerusalem, including the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, the killing of defenseless Palestinians, including children, settlement construction, and settler extremism, in addition to the Israeli attacks on Christian and Islamic holy sites, especially the Al-Aqsa mosque.

The Palestinian leadership is preparing to take actions to confront Israel’s escalation, Abbas warned, indicating that the international community is incapable of compelling Israel to adhere to international resolutions and halt its criminal and occupying practices, ethnic cleansing measures, and racial discrimination.

He also slammed the US silence on these provocations and practices that are in flagrant violation of international law.

Abbas said the Palestinian leadership will continue to work to mobilize international support to address these challenges and put an end to Israel’s criminal acts.

Macron, for his part, underlined France’s unyielding support for peace and its continued efforts with the concerned sides and all international parties to stop the current escalation and move forward the initiatives that lead to political solutions.

He invited the Palestinian leader to visit France to discuss means to achieve peace and enhance bilateral ties.
