Abandoned home that has laid empty for years finally up for grabs

A derelict Merseyside house which caused a storm on a local Facebook group earlier this year is now available to buy.

The abandoned property is on Lulworth Road, in the sought after area of Birkdale. It previously had planning permission for ten apartments, which has since expired. Proposals have also been drawn up for an additional dwelling on the land.

The semi covers about 4,550 sq ft and is going to auction with Auction House on 14th to 15th September 2022, with a guide price of £480,000.

The historic house was posted on a local Facebook group in March 2022, attracting hundreds of comments from residents commenting on its beauty and curious about its past.

Angela Johnson said the place is 'fascinating' and 'must have so much history'. She asked: "This house has always intrigued me. Anyone know why is has stood empty for so long and fell into such disrepair? It must have been a stunning home in its day."

Users flocked to share their admiration of the property. One woman said: "It's a beauty, hopefully someone will take it on and renovate it back to its former glory. A house on Stanley Avenue, wasn't as in as bad condition as this, has just been renovated to a really high standard with original features replaced like for like - it's so beautiful."

Another said: "It’s such a shame a beautiful house is going to waste."

Harrison Brown told the ECHO his family lived there from the 1990s until 2010. His father, ex-doorman Roy, would host large parties, as well as the annual bonfire night for the local church.

He was able to give an insight into the home's glorious past: "In the basement was the original built-in in wine cellar and the old butchers pantry with a 300kg large stone table that was removed and replaced with a fully functioning gym. The old servants bell would reach the basement too with the original wire from when the house was built back in the 1800s. The house has always had prestige and would have been owned by a very wealthy family at the time."

He added that his father 'had a games room with a pool table, darts board, cocktail bar and a vinyl collection' as well as a study and a large living room with four sofas and a 'majestic' fireplace.

The now overgrown garden featured a tennis court, football pitch and two treehouses, while the former stables were transformed into a bike shed.

Harrison said: "Roy built most of the interior himself as he was a qualified bricklayer, painter and decorator. The house was fully furnished with lavish decorations and full of little treasures."

Current owner Ashley, who has had the property about 12 months, said there's now 'not much to see' inside and the house is 'back to bare brick'.

He told the ECHO: "I hope the new owners refurbish the property back to its former glory, its been empty for so and its a shame to see it deteriorate."

The majority of house sales on Lulworth Road in the last year were flats, according to Rightmove data, although detached homes on the road go for an average of £390,000.

The listing by Auction House added: "The property has great development potential subject relevant planning consents being acquired."
