Abandoned Hollywood Hills Mansion Taken Over By Squatters

San Francisco struggles to return to its downtown pre-pandemic occupancy rate

Recent reports have surfaced regarding the unfortunate state of two multimillion-dollar abandoned mansions in the Hollywood Hills area. One of the properties, situated on Mulholland Drive, has been left vacant for several years, leading to it being occupied by squatters. This is not an isolated incident, as another mansion on Sunset Boulevard has also fallen victim to squatters, who defaced the property with graffiti.

Neighbors in the vicinity of the abandoned mansion on Mulholland Drive have expressed concerns about the safety hazards posed by the squatters. Incidents of crime have been reported, with one neighbor recounting an attack involving steel rebar and a beer bottle. Both properties are owned by John Powers Middleton, a notable film producer recognized for his work on films such as 'Oldboy' and 'Manchester by the Sea'.

Local authorities, including L.A. City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, have taken notice of the situation and are actively working to address the issues at hand. The Los Angeles Police Department has intervened by escorting individuals out of the Mulholland property and implementing security measures, including the installation of a chain-link fence to deter further trespassing.

Raman emphasized the seriousness of the matter, labeling it a public safety concern with repercussions for both residents and the community at large. She stressed the importance of property owners taking responsibility for their assets or facing consequences from the city.

Efforts are underway to combat the problem, with the Department of Building and Safety conducting investigations and enforcement actions at both locations. The city is committed to ensuring that the properties are no longer a blight on the neighborhood and that the well-being of residents is safeguarded.
