Abandoned church on the market for an undisclosed price

An abandoned church has gone up for sale in a Merseyside town.

The former St Richard's Chapel Of Ease on Miranda Road, Bootle has come on to the market for an undisclosed price. The property, which was built in 1937, backs on to Bootle South Recreation Ground and closed down in 2019 due to mounting repair costs and the falling congregation numbers.

The 4,568 square foot church has now been listed by Eddison's estate agents. The single-storey building still has its original stained glass windows and has a double garage attached at the back of the property.

The agents say the church itself is still in good condition with a large open nave with curved ceilings which reach a height of 12 metres. It is currently listed on Rightmove as "suitable for owner occupation, development or re-development to residential or commercial purposes".

In 1991, after the demolition of St Alexander's Church the parish combined with St Richard's. The property is close to Bootle cricket club and has rail links with Kirkdale, Bank Hall and Bootle Oriel Road stations all within half a mile.

A post on Rightmove reads: "The property comprises a large vacant former church dating from the first half of the 20th Century. The property is a single story being constructed of brick elevations under a pitched tiled roof with stained glass windows.

"There is a single-story double garage attached to the southern elevation of the church of the Chapel of Ease. The Chapel of Ease is of simple design with a large open nave with curved ceilings to a maximum height of approximately 12 metres and a number of side rooms leading off one corridor."
