Abandoned Camelot site reopens to public after 10 years

Visitors will get the chance to return to the abandoned Camelot site this year.

The theme park was a favourite among Merseyside families thanks to its accessible location in Charnock Richard, Lancashire.

Camelot was open for almost 30 years and centred around the legend of Camelot.

But in 2012 the theme park closed its doors for the final time, leaving an eerie setting for the new apocalyptic-inspired Camelot Rises event.

The spook-fest is an immersive one-mile drive-through experience crawling with zombies "hungry for human flesh" and military personnel on a mission to kill them and keep control of the park.

It is similar to driving through a safari park, except there's the weapon-laden living dead to contend with and not some naughty monkeys stealing your wing mirror.

Expect booming sound effects, sirens, smoke, flashing lights and atmospheric music as you make your way through the mythical Kingdom of Camelot.

The experience has four drive-through zones - the River of the Dead, Military Checkpoint, Camelot Castle and Valley of the Dead.

There's also three giant cinema screens located in the Controlled Military Zone area, which will be showing a number of scary movie favourites, a licensed bar and several food and drink outlets.

Films scheduled to be screened include The Crazies, A Quiet Place, Insidious, The Unborn, 28 Weeks Later, Evil Dead, Get Out, Ring and The Hills Have Eyes.

The whole event is contactless and runs over six consecutive weekends, starting Saturday and February 5 and 6.

The remaining weekends will also include Thursday and Friday showings.

Depending on the date you visit, screenings will range from one to three per day and it is advised you arrive at least an hour and a half early to give you enough time to drive through the different zones before the film begins.

The audio will be played through your car radio, meaning having a working one is essential.

If you're brave enough you can browse the films available and book your slot here.
