As training camps across the NFL began, Davante Adams wanted the world to know how highly he thought of his new — and old — quarterback Derek Carr. When asked about the transition away from reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers, he made sure to point out he was moving “from Hall of Famer to Hall of Famer.”
It was a statement he’d later have to clarify, explaining Carr wasn’t a Hall of Famer currently, but that he believes he could be. Two days later, Rodgers returned the favor — only this time about Green Bay’s new WR1 Allen Lazard. And yes, he knew exactly how funny the comparison looked.

Rodgers threw out the “Hall of Famer to Hall of Famer” quote, then paused as if he were reading a laugh line from a multi-camera sitcom. The press corps in the Green Bay locker room ate it up before the three-time MVP told reporters moving on from Adams would be “a transition.”
Adams left the Packers after 669 regular season catches and 81 total touchdowns. In 2021 he had 123 receptions for 1,553 yards. Lazard, in his four-year NFL career, has 109 receptions for 1,448 yards.
Lazard will fill a much larger role in 2022 alongside supporting castmates like Randall Cobb, rookie second round pick Christian Watson, and possibly Sammy Watkins if he can stay healthy and make the team. None of those guys are as good as Davante Adams. But Derek Carr is no Aaron Rodgers, either.
