The New York Jets are expected to sign Aaron Rodgers ’ former Green Bay Packers teammate and wide receiver Randall Cobb.
According to Adam Schefter, the pair are likely to reunite in New York after playing eight-years together in Green Bay across Cobb’s two spells at the Packers.
Cobb, 32, is set to pen a one-year deal, and whether he was signed off a recommendation from Rodgers is currently unknown. Rodgers lobbied for the Packers to bring Cobb back to Green Bay in 2021 after two years away, so it might not be out of the realms of possibility that the quarterback did it again after reports during the Jets chase for Rodgers that the four-time MVP had given a list of players he would like to work with.
Rodgers refuted that claim, but has close ties with Cobb, who is a one-time Pro Bowler, but has seen a significant decrease in performance in recent years. He generated 375 yards on 28 catches with five touchdowns in 2021, matching a career-low.
And last season, Cobb missed four games with an ankle injury, catching just 34 passes for 417 yards while managing one touchdown.
However, on a positive note on the acquisition, Rodgers has 534 career completions to Cobb across 10 seasons together. That includes the Play-Offs and is the second most to any player in his career behind Davante Adams and his 687.
Cobb isn’t the only ex-Rodgers teammate to join the Jets this offseason. Allen Lazard joined the Jets before Rodgers’ blockbuster trade, and the pair were seen at the Garden for the New York Knicks’ NBA Play-Off loss to the Miami Heat.
Veteran Cobb will join a heavily armed receiver group. Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, Lazard, Mecole Hardman, Corey Davis and Denzel Mims are all on the Jets’ books and it remains to be seen whether they will be able to keep them all.
The Jets only have one Super Bowl to their name, and that win came all the way back in the late 60s. The acquisition of Rodgers has raised hopes of being serious competitors in the 2023 season. “Aaron is a tremendous player - that’s an understatement - and he makes everybody around him better, and we’re so happy to have him,” owner Woody Johnson said. “We are delighted, couldn’t be happier to have him as a New York Jet. Welcome to New York, Aaron, I’m glad to have you.”
