Aaron Rodgers Retirement: Could Sunday be his final NFL game?

No one really knows what the future holds for Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. His two years in New York have been properly labeled as an abject failure, an unceremonious wind-down of the career of one of the best to ever play the position. There are major, looming questions about whether he’ll be back with the team for the 2025 season, and there is a chance that he’ll be done with football for good after this coming Sunday.

Aaron Rodgers Might Be Playing In His Final NFL Game This Week

The fall off of his performance has been a rapid one. After winning the MVP award in 2021 as a member with of the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers has seen a noticeable drop in his production across the board. There was of course the missed season due to the Achilles injury that he suffered at the start of 2023, but was already seemingly on the decline. His 12 interceptions in 2022 were the most that he’d thrown since his first year as a starter in 2008, and had the worst passer rating of his career, as well.

Things haven’t gotten much better in his return from injury. He has hit double-digit interceptions once again in 2024, and his passer rating has been even worse this year than in 2022. He was supposed to be the quarterback that bucked the decades-long trend for the Jets by making them Super Bowl contenders, but he has instead led them to a 4-12 record entering the final week of the season.

With the immediate future of Aaron Rodgers up in the air, there is a chance that New York’s Week 18 game will be the final one of his career. There have been reports this past week that the Jets will look to move on from both him and Davante Adams during the coming off-season, and there may not be too many teams that are willing to take on the aging and declining pass thrower. He would not only be a question mark on the field, but also brings the added baggage of his off-the-field activities and his assumed penchant for power within an organization.

The Jets will play host to the Dolphins on Sunday, a game that holds big implications for Miami. But aside from the people who will be watching to see if the Dolphins make the playoffs, some could be watching to be witness to the final game of Rodgers’ playing career.

If he has it his way, it won’t be the last time that Aaron Rodgers takes the field. He has had a proud and successful career full of accolades, and it is unlikely that he is willing to end his time in the league on such a sour note. We are probably in store for an off-season of speculations and questions regarding his future, so an answer surely won’t be coming within the next few weeks.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Jets are listed as 2.5-point underdogs for the game against the Dolphins.
