Aaron Ramsdale shares Illan Meslier frustration as he looks back on Leeds United defeat

Aaron Ramsdale has revealed the reaction to Illan Meslier’s performance in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Leeds United in December is something that ‘winds’ him up. Meslier made eight saves but could not prevent the Whites from being on the end of another heavy defeat at the hands of one of the Premier League’s ‘big six’.

The 22-year-old has had a much more difficult campaign for Leeds this time around than his debut Premier League campaign – with errors arriving more frequently. He has, however, been even more exposed than last season, making the most saves in the division with 143 – 12 more than second placed Kasper Schmeichel.

During that encounter at Elland Road, Leeds found themselves 3-0 down against the Gunners by half time, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring twice and Bukayo Saka adding another. Meslier had already made three saves inside the opening five minutes before Martinelli opened the scoring after 16 minutes.

Some pundits claimed that Meslier should have done better with the first goal, as he managed to get a hand to it, but failed to keep it out. But speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Ramsdale claimed that it frustrates him about that life as a goalkeeper, as people only focus on the things that could’ve been done better, rather than what has been done well.

He said: “When we played Leeds away Meslier has made five or six saves first half but they were 3-0 down. Nobody was mentioning his saves, they mentioned one of the goals which he might have done better for.

“If you get 10 shots at you, more times than not you’re going to let one in, but that’s what people always talk about. That’s for another day, but that winds me up.”
