Aaron Ramsdale apologises for Arsenal howler as Jamie Carragher slams Southampton decision

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale apologised to fans for an error that led to the home side going a goal down just 27 seconds into the first half. against Southampton. The Gunners went into the game looking to arrest a decline in form that has seen them register back-to-back draws in the league.

It saw the side drop their lead from eight points down to just four, with the need to return back to winning ways against the Saints. That didn't go to plan early on the as Ramsdale looked to pass the ball to Zinchenko in midfield with his first few touches of the game, but Carlos Alcaraz intercepted it.

The Argentinian youngster latched onto the ball and curled it beyond the Arsenal shot stopper to find the back of the net and give the away side a shock lead. That was later doubled as former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott's run behind the defence saw him through on goal to finish again.

Gabriel Martinelli pulled one back shortly after, but the Gunners trailed going into the break in need of a few goals after half time to register a win. Heading into changing room, Ramsdale put his hand up towards the crowd apologetically after his error put the side behind.

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher slammed the goalkeeper in his half time assessment on Sky Sports, saying: "Absolutely fantastic [from Alcaraz], straight from kick-off. It’s a mess from Aaron Ramsdale, there’s no doubt about that. Talking about Arsenal trying to show composure, that was what they were trying to do earlier in the game but Alcaraz reads the pass brilliantly, he’s waiting for that pass to go in there and he sets off before it’s played - reads the game brilliantly.

"Takes a couple of touches and gets a decent effort away but as I said, from the goalkeeper it’s really poor. He’s got to save it. We said it for the Jarrod Bowen goal at West Ham that made it two two - listen, he’s been praised the last couple of weeks for his performance at Anfield, Alcaraz does brilliantly to read the pass and get the shot off but he wouldn’t have expected to score that, and he shouldn’t score. Ramsdale gets that right hand on it, he should be dealing with it, he should be stronger."
