A77 warning to motorists as essential works will see key stretches closed overnight next week

Motorists are being warned of overnight closures on a stretch of the A77 through Ayrshire next week.

Roads chiefs are carrying out essential maintenance between the busy Whitletts roundabout and Sandyford Toll.

The works will begin at 8pm on Monday, January 31 and are scheduled to be complete by 6am on Thursday, February 3.

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland as part of the network management contract for the south-west trunk road unit, say this is the continuation of a project from October and November last year.

A spokesperson added: "This scheme will benefit vehicles using this route each day by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future."

Drivers are warned to plan ahead and the work will be carried out using the following closures and diversions...

  • Monday, January 31 to Tuesday, February 1 – Total closure of the A77 northbound carriageway from Monday at 8pm until 6am on Tuesday.
  • Tuesday, February 1 to Thursday, February 3 – Total closure of the A77 southbound carriageway from 8pm on Tuesday until 6am on Wednesday and from 8pm on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday.

Vehicles travelling southbound will be diverted between Dutch House roundabout and Whitletts roundabout via the A78.

Traffic will then follow the A79 and re-join the A77 via the B743 Heathfield Road. Northbound traffic will follow the same diversion route in reverse.

It should also be noted that during the overnight closures, access will be maintained solely for properties and businesses within the extents of the scheme – and this will be under escort.

There will be no continuous travel through the closure points of the A77. If you need to travel between the closure points, you will have to use the signed diversion.

Motorists may be asked to produce proof of residence – for example, a driver’s licence – to access the impacted areas. Access for emergency services vehicles will be maintained.
