A52 like a ‘racetrack’ as residents say they hear ‘squeaking brakes’

Car meets in Nottinghamshire have turned part of the A52 into a ‘racetrack’ where neighbours can hear the 'screeching brakes' and 'speeding' of the cars late at night.

Local residents aired their concerns after police were called to a ‘very minor’ car crash when a number of car enthusiasts met up on Saturday (January 7) at the Nottingham Knight Island, between West Bridgford and Edwalton. There were no injuries, while the car was cleared and the other vehicles were moved on.

Neighbours have since voiced their concerns and have described the section of the road as ‘racetrack‘, giving an overview of the problems.

Khalid Sharif, has lived in the area for 32 years, he said: “At 2, after 12 O'clock (at night), it’s like a racetrack. I’ve heard squeaking brakes, the cars go up from this roundabout to the other roundabout speeding.

“I must say I haven’t heard it recently but it happens. I’m sure it’s a group of people who gather after 12. I think it’s a busy part of the road, the A52.”

In October last year, residents in Edwalton shared their concerns about the same section of the A52 and described it as 'noisy and scary' as cars gathered.

Another local resident Terry Harris, 57, said: “It’s been a problem for a while now, I don’t know what it will take for them to stop. It’s quite worrying to be honest.”

Another nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s frustrating. It’s usually late at night they’ll come and start speeding up and down. For me, I just don’t think it’s safe. Someone could get hurt.”

In October, Nottinghamshire Police took measures to clamp down on large groups of car enthusiasts causing issues for residents nearby. Officers from the Rushcliffe neighbourhood policing team were deployed and told to focus patrols on the A52 between Gamston and Edwalton and the A453 Ratcliffe-on-Soar. Multiple reports of residents’ concerns have been made recently of inconsiderate driving, an increase in noise, and vehicles causing issues for other road users and local people.

It follows previous concerns surrounding dangerous driving and car meets during the coronavirus lockdown. In one particular case more than 300 vehicles gathered just off the A453 at East Midlands Parkway, prompting dispersal measures to be put in place.
