A1 Northumberland collisions: Everything we know after multiple crashes close parts of road

Northumberland experienced traffic and travel chaos on Monday as multiple crashes shut parts of the A1 in areas including north Gosforth and the Berwick stretch of the road.

Over the course of the afternoon and evening, lanes of the road were closed several times after a series of collisions. Emergency services attended the incidents with several people taken to hospital as a result of their injuries, with more treated at each scene.

Below, we have compiled a summary of the incidents which occurred on Monday, April 11 on the A1 in the North East..

What happened at Berwick?

The A1 northbound was closed between the junctions with the A1068 and the A1167 south of Berwick-Upon-Tweed following a collision between three vehicles. Emergency services were present and several people were taken to hospital as a result of the crash.

Just before 3pm, National Highways England said: 'Traffic is currently stopped on the A1 in both directions between the A1167 near Berwick Upon Tweed and B1340 due to a collision. Delays are beginning to build on approach to the incident. Please allow extra time if travelling in the area.'

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly before 2.30pm yesterday (Monday), we received a report of a collision on the A1, land north east of Belford Sewage Works. Several people were taken to hospital and the road was closed until 6.20pm. Enquires into the incident are ongoing.”

The Northbound carriageway of the A1 re-opened at 4.50pm. The Southbound carriageway remained closed until 6.30pm.

Incident at Rosebrough

A collision on the A1 at Rosebrough also occurred with a vehicle overturned as a result. Thankfully, nobody was injured in this incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision. The vehicle was on its roof but everyone got out of the vehicle. There were no serious injuries. This happened on the A1 near Rosebrough Farm Cottages."

Collision near Belford

The road was blocked with queueing traffic following the crash on the A1 between the turn-off for Bamburgh and Cragmill Road. Emergency services were in attendance and three people were taken to hospital as a result of the crash.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 in Belford at around 2.30pm on Monday. We transported three patients to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for further treatment."

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene as a person came off the road. Fire assisted as they were trapped in their vehicle. They were treated at the roadside then taken away."

At 4pm, Northumbria Police said : “Officers are currently in attendance at the scene of a collision involving a truck and a car on the A1 near Belford Sewage works. Emergency services are in attendance." The road was closed in both directions, with diversions in place at Warren Mill and the junction with B1342 until early evening.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police added that enquiries into the incident are underway. They said: “Shortly before 2.30pm yesterday (Monday), we received a report of a collision on the A1, north east of Belford Sewage Works. Several people were taken to hospital and the road was closed until 6.20pm. Enquires into the incident are ongoing.”

Evening collision at North Brunton, north of Gosforth

A woman was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following a crash in North Brunton on the A1 north of Gosforth on Monday evening. Enquiries into this incident are also ongoing.

The A1 was closed northbound between J79 to J80 near North Brunton and Gosforth Park due to this collision. Emergency services attended to assist at the scene.

National Highways traffic officers were also in attendance to assist with traffic management as the incident caused serious delays during the evening commute peak time. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 6.30pm on Monday, we received a report of a collision involving a car and a lorry on the A1 northbound near Gosforth/Seaton Burn.

“The female driver of the car was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was released from hospital later that day. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
